Weekly Highlights: July 10-14, 2014

Floor Action:

Military- On July 14, the House, approved, 344-81, H.R. 2810, the National Defense Authorization Act for FY2018, as amended.

Human Trafficking- On July 12, the House passed several human trafficking bills by voice vote: H.R. 2200, the Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Reauthorization Act of 2017; H.R. 2480, the Empowering Law Enforcement to Fight Sex Trafficking Demand Act; and H.R. 2664, the Enhancing Detection of Human Trafficking Act.

Health- On June 12, the House passed, by voice vote, H.R. 2430, the FDA Reauthorization Act of 2017.

Mark-Ups:

Appropriations- On July 13, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved, 31-0, the FY2018 Military Construction, Veterans’ Affairs (VA), and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered).

On July 13, the House Appropriations Committee approved the FY2018 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (as-yet-unnumbered) and the Financial Services and General Government (as-yet-unnumbered) spending bills. Both bills were approved by separate votes, 31-21.

On July 12, the House Appropriations Committee approved, by voice vote, the FY2018 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered).

On July 13, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS), Education, and Related Agencies approved, 9-6, the FY2018 Labor, HHS, Education, and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered), as amended.

On July 13, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Agencies passed, by voice vote, the FY2018 State and Foreign Operations spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered).

On July 11, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Related Agencies approved, by voice vote, the FY2018 Transportation, HUD, and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered).

Hearings:

Human Trafficking- On June 13, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a hearing, “Review of the 2017 Trafficking in Persons Report.”

On July 12, the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee held a hearing, “Force Multipliers: How Transportation and Supply Chain Stakeholders are Combatting Human Trafficking.”

International- On July 12, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing, “Beyond Microfinance: Empowering Women in the Developing World.”

Veterans- On July 11, the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee held a hearing on several bills, including S. 833, the Servicemembers and Veterans Empowerment and Support Act.
