Transportation, Housing Appropriations Bill Clears House Committee

On July 17, the House Appropriations Committee approved, 31-20, the FY2018 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Related Agencies spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The Subcommittee on Transportation, HUD, and Related Agencies approved the measure on July 11 (see The Source, 7/14/17).

According to the committee report, the legislation would provide $56.512 billion in discretionary funds in FY2018 for the Departments of Transportation and HUD, as well as other federal agencies. This is $1.097 billion below FY2017 and $8.584 billion over the president’s FY2018 budget request.

HUD would receive $38.336 billion in FY2018, $488.804 million below FY2017 and $6.982 billion above the administration’s request.

With regard to the family self-sufficiency program, the committee noted that it “expects [HUD] to prioritize assistance to individuals and families that results in job stability, increased tenant incomes, and greater rent contributions” (p. 83).
