Senate Subcommittee Examines Zika in the Western Hemisphere

On July 13, the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues held a hearing, “Zika in the Western Hemisphere: Risks and Responses.” The hearing addressed growing concerns regarding the spread of the Zika virus and its effect on pregnant women and their children.

The following witnesses testified:

  • Judith G. Garber, acting assistant secretary, Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs;
  • Tom Frieden, director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and
  • Irene Koek, acting deputy assistant administrator, U.S. Agency for International Development.
