Senate Committee Examines Opening of Combat Roles to Women

On February 2, the Senate Armed Services Committee held a hearing, “Implementation of the Decision to Open All Ground Combat Units to Women.” The hearing follows the December 2015 announcement by Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter to lift the ban on women serving in ground combat units.

The following witnesses testified:

• The Honorable Raymond E. Mabus, Jr., secretary of the Navy;
• The Honorable Patrick J. Murphy, under secretary of the Army;
• General Mark A. Milley, chief of staff, United States Army; and
• General Robert B. Neller, commandant, United States Marine Corps.
