Senate Committee Examines Efforts to End Child Marriage

On September 14, the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues held a hearing, “Protecting Girls: Global Efforts to End Child Marriage.” The hearing sought to draw attention to the issue of child marriage and assess efforts to protect girls across the globe.   

The following witnesses testified:

  • Anne Richard, assistant secretary, Bureau of Population Refugees and Migration, U.S. Department of State;
  • Catherine M. Russell, ambassador-at-large, Global Women’s Issues, U.S. Department of State;
  • Lakshmi Sundaram, executive director, Girls Not Brides; and
  • Suzanne Petroni, senior director, Global Health, Youth and Development International Center for Research on Women.
