Legislative Branch Spending Bill Clears Senate, House Committees

On May 19, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed, 30-0, the FY2017 Legislative Branch spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The bill provides funding for operations at the Senate, Capitol Police, Library of Congress, and other Legislative Branch agencies.

According to the committee summary, the bill would allocate $3.021 billion in FY2017. This amount is $23.5 million over FY2016, but $251.565 million below the president’s request.

House Appropriations

On May 17, the House Appropriations Committee approved, by voice vote, the FY2017 Legislative Branch spending bill, as amended (as-yet-unnumbered). The Legislative Branch Subcommittee approved its bill on April 20 (see The Source, 4/22/16).

The legislation would provide $3.482 billion in FY2017. This amount is $73 million over FY2016 and $152.473 below the president’s request. The committee approved the bill by voice vote.

According to the committee report, the bill would provide baby changing stations in bathrooms in House office buildings and the Capitol, as well as access to parking for pregnant congressional staffers.
