House Subcommittee Holds Hearing on Africa Budget

On October 11, the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations held a hearing, “The State Department and USAID [United States Agency for International Development] FY2018 Africa Budget.”

Approximately 80 percent of the administration’s FY2018 $5.2 billion budget request for Africa would be allocated toward global health programs to “support control of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, prevent child and maternal deaths, and combat infectious disease threats.” Among other provisions, funds also would be directed toward economic development programs that would “empower women and youth to advance economically.”

The president submitted his FY2018 budget request to Congress in May (see The Source, 5/26/17).

The following witnesses testified:

  • Donald Yamamoto, acting assistant secretary, Bureau of African Affairs, U.S. Department of State; and
  • Cheryl Anderson, acting assistant administrator, Bureau for Africa, U.S. Agency for International Development.
