House Committee Approves Bills to Increase Women in STEM

On November 15, the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee approved, by voice vote, several bills, including H.R. 4254, the Women in Aerospace Education Act, and H.R. 4375, the STEM Research and Education Effectiveness and Transparency Act.

H.R. 4254
Sponsored by Rep. Steve Knight (R-CA), the bill would encourage the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to “institute a process to prioritize the promotion and recruitment of qualified candidates who are women or individuals who are historically underrepresented in STEM.” In addition, the director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) “may give priority to proposals for such placements that provide female fellows with research experience in aerospace engineering and related fields in which women are underrepresented.”

H.R. 4375
Sponsored by Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-VA), the measure would provide for a study on broadening participation of women and other underrepresented individuals in certain NSF research and education programs.
