Helene Gayle, MD, MPH, President/CEO, CARE USA, discussed the high rate of maternal deaths in the developing world, the underlying causes, and effective interventions to save women’s lives.

Aparajita Gogoi, PhD, National Coordinator, White Ribbon Alliance (WRA) India; Senior Advisor, Advocacy and Communication, CEDPA India, discussed the successes and challenges of mobilizing grassroots and policy responses to reduce maternal deaths in India.

Deborah Armbruster, CNM, MPH, FACNM, Director, Prevention of Postpartum Hemorrhage Initiative (POPPHI) Project at PATH, presented a film clip describing inexpensive tools to prevent postpartum hemorrhage, the leading cause of maternal deaths in the developing world.

Reps. Lois Capps and Kirsten Gillibrand and Ms. Christy Turlington Burns also spoke briefly.
