History and Accomplishments

In April 1977, fifteen Congresswomen held the first meeting of the Women’s Caucus.

Caucus Leadership

Since the beginning, the Caucus’ bipartisan spirit has been reflected in its leadership.

The Bipartisan Women’s Caucus

The Bipartisan Women’s Caucus (formerly the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues) is a Congressional Member Organization (CMO) registered with the House Administration Committee; its membership includes the women Members of the House of Representatives. The Bipartisan Women’s Caucus is not formally affiliated with the Women’s Congressional Policy Institute; however, the two organizations share similar goals.

WCPI achieves our mission through collaborative work with the Caucus. We facilitate bipartisan relationships and policy priorities among the women Members of Congress through events, programming, and meetings. We believe the Bipartisan Women’s Caucus and its 47-year history of bipartisan work demonstrates the possibilities for collaboration in Congress.

History of the Bipartisan Women’s Caucus

The Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues was founded in 1977 and later changed its name to the Bipartisan Women’s Caucus (BWC). When it was founded, the Caucus included 15 of the 18 women who served in the House of Representatives. Today, nearly one-third of the House are women members.

With its founding, the Caucus offered a clear space for women members to speak in public and with each other about women’s policy issues with the goal of developing, initiating, and promoting bipartisan legislation and public policies for women.
